GYNECOLOGICAL
DISORDERS
Irregular menstrution, infertility, menopause syndromes
Gynecological disorders
Irregular menstruation due
to dysfunction of the ovary and with disturbance of menstruation is
known as menstrual dysfunction. It includes all irregularities of the
menstrual cycle, such as amenorrhea (abnormal absence or suppression of
the menstrual discharge), dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), and
menorrhagia (abnormally profuse menstrual flow), along with prolonged or
shortened course of the cycle, the color of the blood being too dark or
too light, etc.
Acupuncture acts to regulate the body functions and is effective in
normalizing the menses. It helps to relieve cramps, reduce clots, and
regulate the flow and duration of the menstrual period. It also helps to
alleviate some of the unpleasant accompanying effects of the menses such
as premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and retention of body fluids, and the hot
flashes, irritability, and depression sometimes associated with
menopause. Acupuncture will also help to strengthen the body and
effectively aid in recovery from childbirth, post-partum fatigue, and
weakness. It is an effective treatment for post-partum blues since it
gives a sense of relaxation and well-being.
Acupuncture can also effectively aid in the treatment of vaginal
infections such as leukorrhea, a whitish vaginal discharge resulting
from inflammation or congestion of mucous membrane.
Prior to childbirth, if the fetus is in a breach or transverse position,
acupuncture can aid in the movement of the fetus to the correct fetal
position. Acupuncture is the safest anesthesia for childbirth since
there are no drugs involved, not undesirable side effects, and no
transfer of drugs to the baby
Gynecological
Menopause -
Acupuncture often extremely effective in the treatment of menopause.
Acupuncture is effective in regulating hormone imbalances. Menopausal
symptoms are generally due to an imbalance in hormones, specifically,
elevated FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) and lowered estrogen and
progesterone.
PMS - Acupuncture
have a lot to offer for women suffering from PMS. Most of the symptoms
of PMS are due to stagnation of energy. This results in pain,
irritability, bloating, moodiness, food cravings, and breast tenderness.
Over a few menstrual periods Acupuncture will regulate the flow of Qi so
pain and other symptoms will disappear.
Menstrual
Disorders - Acupuncture is very helpful in cases of Amenorrhea,
Irregular Periods, and Dysmenorrhea. I have also had a very good success
rate with cases of Spastic Dysmenorrhea, which is a specific condition
where women often have debilitating spasms and pain the first day or two
of their menses, which can be accompanied by loss of consciousness or
vomiting.
Acupuncture and
Infertility
Acupuncture works best
when a functional problem is the cause of infertility, specifically when
endometriosis, ovulatory problems or hormonal imbalances are the cause
for not getting pregnant.
On the other hand,
acupuncture has not been proven to be effective when structural
problems, such as an improperly formed epididymis or a blocked fallopian
tube, are the cause of infertility.
Acupuncture and Female Infertility
Many women chose
acupuncture infertility treatment either on its own or in conjunction
with assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures, such as IVF.
Studies have proved the
effectiveness of acupuncture for infertility. A 2004 study conducted by
the Reproductive Medicine and Fertility Center in Colorado found that
51% of women who underwent both IVF and acupuncture treatment at the
same time became pregnant, while only 36% of those who only underwent
IVF did. The latter group also had higher rates of miscarriage
stillbirth (20%) compared to those women who had received acupuncture
(8%).
Acupuncture and Male Infertility
Men can also use
acupuncture to treat their fertility problems, including erectile
dysfunction or sperm health problems, such as low sperm count. The men
who participated, those who had acupuncture had an increased percentage
of sperm in their semen; their sperm structure and morphology was also
healthier than their counterparts who did not undergo acupuncture
infertility treatment.
